Who goes there?

Description

I had to retire Jasper's castle hide and favorite log. He was getting a bit too big for the hide (it was made for smaller lizards and fish) and the driftwood log was starting to show signs of molding...so I had to throw it out. The pet store didn't have any more logs that would fit in his tank so he's currently lacking one. He doesn't seem too upset though because now he has a brand new hide that's much bigger than the old one and it has lots of holes and tunnels in it for him to take a snooze. I came home this evening to find him inside it and he popped his head out to see what was going on. As soon as he saw me he came out and I fed him his supper. He looks pretty happy with the new hide and I'm glad he is...darn thing was $25!

He's kind of skiddish with new things so I was worried he wouldn't like this new addition to his tank, but seeing him using it really made my day! He will be moving into a new tank soon. The one I wanted ended up not being the right fit for him so I'll continue the search. The tank he's in now is not dangerously small, but he could be in a bigger one. Crested geckos need lots of room to climb and romp...they do jump around a lot and Jasper is quite active at night! He's pretty happy the way he is, but I think he would like to have a little bit more room.

FYI: crested geckos DO need hides. They use them to sleep or gain extra moisture from (this can help with shading or if I'm gone too long to maintain his tank's humidity). I DO have a humid hide for him, but it's too big for his current tank. The next tank he'll have will be big enough for his current hide and the humid one. He never has problems with shedding so the humid hide would just be a moist resting spot for him if his heat lamps dry out his tank too much (which is a frequent problem I have in the winter!).
